What You Use — Stays on Your Skin

Every day, millions of enthusiasts reach for a bottle, a tin, or a spray to care for their vehicles and their home. Most never stop to read the ingredient list. They probably should.
The surface care industry — from automotive waxes and polishes to household cleaners and leather conditioners — has long relied on petroleum distillates, synthetic silicones, and harsh chemical solvents to deliver fast, visible results. These ingredients work. But at what cost — to the surfaces being treated, and to the people doing the treating?
The Case Against Synthetics and Petroleum Distillates
Petroleum distillates are hydrocarbon-based solvents derived from crude oil refining. They are effective at cutting through grease and oxidation, but they are also known skin irritants and potential carcinogens with prolonged exposure. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has documented respiratory and dermal risks associated with repeated contact with petroleum-based compounds.
Silicones — the ingredient behind that instant "wet look" shine — present a different problem. While largely inert on skin, they form an occlusive barrier on treated surfaces that prevents natural materials like leather, wood, and painted finishes from breathing. Over time, silicone buildup can actually accelerate the degradation of the very surfaces it appears to protect, trapping moisture and preventing proper bonding of subsequent treatments.
Harsh distillates — concentrated hydrocarbon fractions — carry similar concerns, with higher volatility and a greater risk of off-gassing during application, particularly in enclosed spaces like garages.
What Nature Got Right
Carnauba wax, harvested from the leaves of the Copernicia prunifera palm in Brazil and Florida, has been used as a protective surface coating for over a century. It is non-toxic, biodegradable, and forms a hard, breathable protective layer that bonds naturally with natural, painted and lacquered surfaces without sealing out moisture. Its melting point — among the highest of any natural wax — makes it exceptionally durable under heat and UV exposure.
Beeswax, another time-tested natural ingredient, offers similar breathability with added conditioning properties ideal for leather and wood. Botanical oils — including coconut, jojoba, and evergreen oil — provide deep penetration and nourishment to porous surfaces without the occlusive drawbacks of silicone.
Critically, these ingredients are also dramatically safer for the person applying them. They do not off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at room temperature. They do not require solvent-resistant gloves. They do not trigger the same dermal sensitization pathways as petroleum-based compounds with repeated use.
The Surface Tells the Story
There is another dimension to this conversation that is rarely discussed: what synthetic ingredients do to a surface over years of use. Petroleum distillates, applied repeatedly, can leach plasticizers from rubber seals and trim. Silicone layers, built up over multiple applications, create a barrier that makes future paint correction nearly impossible without aggressive abrasive or chemical stripping. The short-term visual payoff comes with a long-term cost to the integrity of the material.
Naturally derived ingredients work with the chemistry of the surface rather than against it. Carnauba bonds at a molecular level with clear coat finishes. Botanical oils replenish the natural oils lost from leather as it ages. The result is not just a surface that looks better today — it is a surface that is genuinely healthier over time.
A Different Standard
When I founded Zymöl, the guiding principle was straightforward: if you would not be comfortable with an ingredient on your skin, it should not be using it.
